About Camp Bowen

Camp Bowen is a Division of the Canadian Organization of the Blind and DeafBlind (formerly the Camp Bowen Society), a federal, grassroots, charitable organization, headquartered on beautiful Bowen Island, British Columbia, that operates the Camp Bowen summer independence camps, Canada-Wide Blindness/DeafBlindness Skills Training, and outreach programs benefiting people who are blind and Deafblind from across Canada. It also facilitates the Bowen Island Accessibility Group, a program for people with disabilities on Bowen Island, BC.

At the Camp Bowen Division of the Canadian Organization of the Blind and DeafBlind we are passionate about building excellent summer camps where the independence of people who are blind DeafBlind, and low vision can be fostered through friendship.

Our Division’s Purposes

Our Division’s purposes are:

  • (a) To establish and operate a recreation, training and meeting centre for people who are blind, Deafblind, or low vision in a manner consistent with the purposes of the Canadian Organization of the Blind and DeafBlind;
  • (b) To provide Summer Independence Camps, based on the Structured Discovery Learning instructional model, for people who are blind, Deafblind, or low vision in a manner consistent with the purposes of the Canadian Organization of the Blind and DeafBlind; and
  • (c) To undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the above-mentioned purposes that do not otherwise conflict with the purposes of the Canadian Organization of the Blind and DeafBlind.

Our History

The legacy of Camp Bowen dates back to the early 1960’s.
