Camp Description

Camp Bowen’s Community Exploration Camp offers a unique summer adventure designed for blind, low vision, and DeafBlind children from across Canada. Imagine a week on Bowen Island where kids immerse themselves in Braille, explore the island, bond with peers facing similar challenges, and develop unshakable confidence—all while having a fantastic time.

What sets Camp Bowen apart is its exceptional staff. This camp has a wonderful group of caring instructors, including positive blind, low vision, and DeafBlind mentors. They offer practical advice, demonstrating their confidence and competence and showing campers what’s possible when you believe in yourself.

This camp is more than just fun; it’s about creating a safe, inclusive environment where every child can thrive, regardless of their abilities, and discover the world around them. From exploring local workplaces to encountering sea life brought up by a diver, these activities open doors to a world of possibilities, creating impactful
experiences.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Campers also dive into the world of Braille through games, crafts, and projects. These activities not only educate but also inspire a lifelong love of Braille for DeafBlind, blind and low vision campers. As Ruby Ryles highlights in a 2004 study, “low-vision kids need to be taught Braille.”

And if that wasn’t enough, campers enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, from campfires and hikes to self-defense and swimming.

So, join us this summer to explore new horizons, forge lasting friendships, and empower yourself in ways you never thought possible.
